About Rachel

Rachel Simmons (b. 1996) is an American contemporary artist who produces photographs of painted figures and large-scale installation work. Simmons’ current body of work, the installation series Home, explores the effects of sexism and internalized misogyny on interpersonal relationships and inhabited environments.

Came Home is a site-specific installation from Home series. It features four fabric walls, two that are canvas and two that are sheer material; it also has a cotton ceiling and canvas floor. The space is lit with red fluorescence from outside the fabric room. Came Home recounts the artist’s time living in a Savannah house in 2018. After a few months, Simmons discovered that one of her roommates was abusive to his girlfriend, who Simmons also lived with. The abusive roommate would frequently switch the house’s lightbulbs out with red ones and Simmons was often left alone with him. The environment quickly transformed from a place that felt comfortable and warm into one that felt unfamiliar and unsafe.
